Spring Cleaning – Our Space and Our Mind

GYM VLOG #24

Author: Julia Dulgerova

As spring approaches, it’s time for a tradition that’s been around for ages: spring cleaning. But it’s more than just scrubbing floors and organizing closets—it’s a chance to refresh not just our homes, but also our minds. Spring cleaning helps us clear out clutter in our living spaces, which can also help clear our minds. It’s like hitting a reset button for both our homes and our mental well-being. This annual ritual isn’t just about cleaning; it’s a way to feel refreshed and renewed, inside and out.

When spring arrives, there’s a noticeable shift in our mood and energy levels, and there are several reasons why we tend to feel better during this season. Firstly, after months of cold and darkness, the longer days and increasing sunlight that come with spring can have a profound impact on our well-being. Sunlight boosts the production of serotonin in the brain, a neurotransmitter that contributes to feelings of happiness and relaxation. The emergence of flowers, green leaves, and vibrant colors in nature also has a positive effect on our mood, evoking a sense of renewal and optimism. Additionally, the opportunity to spend more time outdoors, whether it’s taking a walk in the park or enjoying a picnic, allows us to soak up the benefits of fresh air and physical activity, which are known to enhance our mood and reduce stress. Springtime often symbolizes new beginnings, growth, and a sense of possibility, all of which can uplift our spirits and make us feel more positive and rejuvenated.

Physically, spring cleaning is crucial for maintaining a healthy and comfortable living environment. Over the winter months, dust accumulates, corners gather cobwebs, and clutter seems to multiply. These physical aspects of our homes can contribute to allergies, respiratory issues, and a general sense of unease. By engaging in a thorough spring cleaning session, we eliminate dust, mold, and other allergens that may have built up. A clean and organized home not only looks better but also promotes better physical health, reducing the risk of allergies and respiratory problems. Additionally, decluttering our living spaces can lead to improved focus and productivity, as a tidy environment often translates to a clearer mind. So, physically cleaning our homes during spring helps us create a healthier, more inviting space to live in, enhancing our overall well-being.

Mentally, spring cleaning offers a chance to declutter our minds and create a sense of mental clarity. Just as physical clutter can weigh down our living spaces, mental clutter can weigh down our thoughts and emotions. Throughout the year, we accumulate stresses, worries, and unfinished tasks that can leave us feeling overwhelmed and drained. Spring cleaning our minds involves letting go of these mental burdens, organizing our thoughts, and prioritizing what truly matters to us. This process can involve journaling, meditation, or simply taking time to reflect on our goals and values. By clearing out mental clutter, we create space for new ideas, creativity, and a sense of inner peace. It’s like giving ourselves a mental reset, allowing us to approach life with a fresh perspective and renewed energy. Ultimately, mental spring cleaning is an essential practice for maintaining our emotional well-being and finding balance in our busy lives.

Having a healthy gut microbiome can actually make it much easier to clear and sort through our minds. The gut and the brain are closely linked, with the gut often being called our “second brain.” When we have a well-balanced gut, filled with a diverse range of beneficial bacteria, it can have a big impact on our mental well-being. Research suggests that a healthy gut can lead to improved mood, less anxiety, and better thinking skills. This means that when we take good care of our gut—by eating a balanced diet with gut healing foods like meat stock, consuming lots of ferments, and making healthy lifestyle choices—we’re also helping our mental clarity. With a strong gut microbiome, we might find it easier to let go of negative thoughts, stay focused on the present moment, and make decisions with a clear mind. So, as we embark on our spring cleaning journey, both physically and mentally, nurturing our gut health could be a powerful way to enhance our overall sense of clarity and well-being. It’s like giving our minds an extra boost to feel refreshed and ready for the new season ahead.

Spring cleaning goes beyond just tidying up our physical spaces—it’s about more than clearing clutter. It’s like a special time to refresh both our surroundings and our minds. As we clean out the old stuff from winter, we also clear out old thoughts, making space for new ideas and energy. This yearly tradition isn’t just about having a cleaner home; it’s about feeling clearer in our heads, ready for the excitement and opportunities of the new season. Through this process, we learn how refreshing it can be to declutter, both inside and out, leaving us feeling lighter and more energized for the days to come.
