1) What are the professional qualifications required to become a Certified GAPS Practitioner (CGP)?
The Certified GAPS™ Practitioner (CGP) Training course is open to Chiropractors, Clinical Nutritionists, Registered Dietitians, Certified Nutritional Therapy Consultants and Practitioners, Naturopathic Doctors, Osteopathic Doctors, Medical Doctors, Nurses, Psychologists, Social Workers, and Occupational Therapists with additional nutrition training, and all other medical and qualified holistic professionals who have extensive training in nutrition, bio-chemistry, and anatomy and physiology. It is not a self-help or cooking course, nor is it about any other content already covered in the GAPS book – although there will be a review of the GAPS to ensure all CPGs know the basics. IF YOU ARE NOT ACTIVELY SEEING CLIENTS/PATIENTS in a clinical setting, please only inquire when you are in active practice. ALL enrollment requests will need to receive final approval by Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride to be processed.
2) What are the paraprofessional qualifications required to become a Certified GAPS Coach (CGC)?
The Certified GAPS™ Coach (CGC) Training is open to individuals who are familiar with and have had personal experience and success with the GAPS Diet for a minimum of one year, who are now seeking a certification to help others learn and implement the GAPS Nutritional Protocol in a non-clinical setting, in addition to professionals without formal nutrition training in nutrition, bio-chemistry, and anatomy and physiology like massage therapists, pharmacists, social workers, personal trainers, health coaches, teachers, etc.
3) What are the differences between the CGP & CGC trainings and what will I learn in the training I qualify to take?
There are some content differences and some shared content between our CGC and CGP training courses.
Coaches learn In-depth, Practitioners Review (the GAPS Diet)
- Our Coaches, even though experienced on their own with GAPS, will need a deeper, more in-depth overview of the GAPS Diet that is through the lens of the COACH perspective rather than through a personal lens.
- Our Practitioners are already using therapeutic diets in their clinical practices, so a more high-level overview is appropriate for them due to their practice experience.
Reviewing, whether in-depth or high level, prepares each student in each training with a strong GAPS Diet foundation. Successive modules will build upon this GAPS foundation.
Coaches take a hands-on, practical, non-clinical approach, Practitioners use clinical protocols
- Coaches are pantry sweeping, kitchen prepping, sharing cooking techniques, “greening” the home and workplace in a practical, non-clinical, hands-on fashion.
- Practitioners are working with therapeutic protocols that are clinical in nature (in a clinical setting) to address the personalized needs of their clients/patients.
Coaches set the stage for success, while the Practitioner oversee the progress of the performance (using a theater analogy here where the Coaches are the lighting and prop techs making the magic happen behind the scenes, where the Practitioners are the actors making the magic happen on the stage. The two are necessary to bring the whole performance to life!)
- Coaches do the foundational GAPS work (kitchen prep, teaching cooking lessons and techniques, conducting pantry sweeps, etc., etc.)
- Practitioners recommend supplements and navigate detox and die-off symptoms by tracking and monitoring the progress of clients/patients through clinical assessments, functional testing, and other clinical applications that are proprietary to each CGP (some CGPs can order lab tests directly and interpret them, where some go through other services to obtain them and have them analyzed – a service sometimes provided by another degree or certification they hold). It all depends on the current skill set of the CGP.
Management Specialties between Coaches and Practitioners
- Coaches specialize in Fussy Eating/MTM techniques to help “break” the fussy eater. This is done in the home, and therefore, appropriate for our CGCs.
- Practitioners troubleshoot targeted detox protocols and die-off management, which can require some clinical investigation, so therefore, appropriate for our CGPs.
Coaching Scope of Practice vs. Clinical Scope of Practice
- Coaches have a limited “coaching” scope of practice where they work with clients and groups in non-clinical settings (the home, the grocery store, online with virtual clients, etc.).
- Practitioners have a wider scope of practice where they work in a clinical setting (home office, wellness center, clinics, virtual consultations, etc.).
Scope of Practice boundaries are outlined in each course to protect the important work of our graduates.
The GAPS Nutritional Protocol is reviewed and taught in each of our training programs (whether in-depth or high level) because it is the core healing element of the GAPS Diet, so along with practical issues, and GAPS Group Lessons, Coaches and Practitioners learn this content. Practical issues will come up for both the CGC and CGP, so it’s an important overlap where personalized issues will be addressed within the scope of practice of each Coach or Practitioner. Our hope is that Coaches and Practitioner pair up as a TEAM to provide the most, well-rounded care for GAPS people! Coaches can assist and run GAPS groups along with, or for, Practitioners, and the Practitioners can help troubleshoot stubborn cases where clinical support is needed. The two unique roles working together provide a powerhouse of knowledge and support that is greatly needed to help make the GAPS Diet possible for people. You know the saying… “It takes a village”!

There are numerous training courses that do not nurture their graduates, nor do they offer business building opportunities and/or support. We saw this need in our own educational evolution and we want to be sure every graduated has what they need to do something meaningful with their certification. The training courses are intensive in nature (12 weeks/CGP, 15 weeks/CGC). Why put all of this hard work into something if it goes nowhere after the training course ends? After all, we want our graduates to continue to bring the hopeful and inspiring message of GAPS to the world. There’s no way we’re going to achieve this goal if our graduates are not inspired to do this work!!
13) Will I be able to gain CEUs from the certification courses (CGC and CGP) to satisfy continuous learning for other certifications I may hold?
GAPS Training, LLC will provide you with a certificate with the CEU hours you have completed at the end of each course. You can use this to apply for CEU’s from your accrediting board/organization.
14) What is required to maintain my GAPS Training certification and my GAPS Graduate membership?
When you complete one of our courses and become certified, you’ll automatically received one year of your GAPS graduate membership and access to the Graduate Member Dashboard (CGC or CGP) for free. From your one year anniversary, an annual renewal membership fee of $99 will be required to maintain your certification as a CGC or CGP and to continually gain access to the Graduate Member Community dashboard.
15) What can I do with my certification once I complete a GAPS Training? Do I need a license in my state to work as a CGC or CGP?
You can run a private practice working one-on-one with clients or patients, teach a live group class, or reach the world with an online course. It’s really up to you and the sky’s the limit! Working with our business development partner and GAPS Instructor, Jessica Pantermuehl of the Holistic Entrepreneur Association International, can jump start any GAPS career! Find your why, your target audience (GAPS is already your niche), and jump on her platform to rocket into a successful GAPS business or practice!
Since our graduates are not diagnosing diseases, prescribing pharmaceutical drugs, or performing surgery, there is no need for a license to work as a CGC or CGP (unless the CGP already holds a medical degree or license). The GAPS Nutritional Protocol is the common element our graduates share with others. It provides the necessary building blocks to help the innate intelligence of the body to heal itself. Still, we ask our graduates to adhere to their scope of practice – to stay within legal boundaries. We encourage each graduate to familiarize themselves with the laws and restrictions in the country, state, or province where they plan to practice. Different areas have different laws that determine what constitutes practicing medicine. We cannot possibly know these laws in every part of the world, so it is up to the individual CGC or CGP to know these bylaws and abide by them.
16) How much does each course cost?
Both the Certified GAPS Practitioner (CGP) Training and the Certified GAPS Coach (CGC) Training are $2,450 USD. See question 17 for payment plan options.
